The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with a solid combination of strategic, communications and relationship management skills combined with practical experience of managing people, resources and ideally programmes in a networked international organisation. The successful candidate will be committed to Save the Children’s mission, vision and values and must be a highly motivated self-starter who brings a business-like achievement and management orientation to the role.  The candidate should also recognise the importance of Save the Children becoming a learning organisation. The CEO would be expected to model this behaviour and encourage his/her team to share and adapt best practice across Save the Children and with partners. 


Strategy:  Set and implement the vision for Save the Children South Africa, consistently with Save the Children’s global strategy and priorities, particularly our global Ambition 2030. Become the partner of choice for children’s rights in South Africa.

Building the team and change leadership: Grow and maintain a high performing, motivated team, leading and engaging existing managers while also attracting new talent to the organisation. Lead the organisation through significant change and growth, embracing new skills without downgrading existing ones.

Advocacy and external relations: Ensure that Save the Children’s profile is enhanced via media and top-level engagement with Government, business, the general public and other NGOs, where appropriate using online and mobile platforms to deliver messages. It will be important to engage with government officials and politicians and initiate conversations which will allow Save the Children to shape policy on issues affecting children such as education, rights, protection and migration. Build on existing strategic partnerships and develop new relationships with businesses and individuals.

Internal relationships:  Foster positive and collaborative working relationships with Save the Children International and with other Save the Children national members; represent Save the Children South Africa in the leadership of the global movement.

Revenue generation: Maintain and grow the revenue base (funding) of the organisation, where appropriate innovating and testing new approaches and methods while optimising the existing revenue generation streams and ensuring the right mix of income to have a sustainable, effective organisation. Help build a network of major corporate, foundation, public and individual donors in South Africa.

Management and financial oversight: The CEO has overall responsibility for the organisational management and financial performance of Save the Children South Africa. The CEO should ensure that the organisation adheres to all relevant national laws as well as legal agreements with national and international affiliates. The integrity and reputation of Save the Children should be upheld at all times.

Program Quality: The CEO should ensure that Save the Children South Africa’s programming activity is of a high quality and aligned with the Save the Children global standards.

Brand and Reputation: The CEO has overall responsibility for protecting and enhancing the reputation and brand of Save the Children.

Board and Chair: The CEO should ensure that the strategies are reflected in the business of the Board and establish a close relationship of trust with the Board Chair, reporting key developments to the Board Chair in a timely manner and seeking support and advice when appropriate.

Pivotal Experience & Expertise
Minimum requirement for a Bachelor’s degree. MBA or relevant post graduate studies would be preferable.
A seasoned executive with at least 5-10 years leading an organization, preferably with experience in the nonprofit space. Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate effectively at all levels internally and externally is crucial Experience in active stakeholder engagement including with government, partners, funders, and the board. Demonstrated experience in transforming a business or leading a transformation agenda. Change management experience.

Leadership Capabilities

Strategic thinking: Demonstrate the strategic, intellectual, conceptual and analytical skills necessary to develop effective plans for achieving goals and shape the vision and strategy of Save the Children South Africa over 3-5 years. Charismatic and able to inspire teams of diverse skillsets through the communication of a compelling vision.

Team leadership: Proven ability to identify, manage, motivate and retain a professional staff.  Brings out the best and personally invests in the success of others. Leadership style should be collaborative, team-oriented, enthusiastic and motivational, and they should be able to create an open, respectful, accountable, non-threatening feedback culture.

Collaboration and influencing: Highly developed interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to enthuse and collaborate with a range of different entities, interest groups and stakeholders and deliver results through a networked leadership model. Experience in roles requiring extensive networking, relationship and alliance building with multiple external and internal stakeholders.

Change agent: Inspires and drives change and transformation needed to continue to grow the organisation. Proven ability to communicate a clear and compelling direction for the organisation, set performance targets in line with the change effort and engage with individuals internally and externally throughout the change process to keep people aligned, maintain commitment and address emotional reactions.

Results orientation: Highly driven, effective and focused on organisational and individual performance.   Energised by challenges, strives to deliver beyond expectations, even under pressure and adverse circumstances.  Keeps focused on key objectives and the core principles of the organisation, ensuring the operational ability to implement strategy, policy, procedures, systems and programmes.
