Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) is worried by the increase in cases of violence against children. The Crime Stats released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) earlier today, show that both murder and rape are on the rise.

Murder increased by 2,9% from 985 in 2017/2018 to 1014 in the 2018/2019 financial year, while rape increased by 1,4% within the same period.

It is also concerning that children are increasingly becoming perpetrators, with 736 of the 21,022 murders recorded by police, committed by children.

“It is worrying that children are increasingly becoming perpetrators, this reflects the nature of the violent society we live in. If we don’t act now to correct this, then the circle of violence will continue for generations to come. We need to deal with the issue of violence in our society holistically from the home setting to the school setting,” says SCSA’s Advocacy Manager Litlhare Radebe.

SCSA calls on government to prioritise preventative measures, like positive parenting and positive discipline. We also call on parents and caregivers to seek help when going through difficult times, as this exposes children to further risks.

Child protection is everybody’s business, all sectors of society must work with the SAPS to ensure that the perpetrators are behind bars.
