Police Commissioners Commit to Ending Violence Against Children

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, Community Safety MEC, Ms. Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, together with her HOD, Yoliswa Makhasi, Police Commissioner Deliwe Suzan De Lange, and 40 Gauteng Police Officers will visit the Save the Children #ViolenceUnwrapped exhibition on Friday 2 December 2016.

“There is no clearer display of our determination to end violence in our society than in our commitment to protecting children,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.

Echoing her sentiments, Save the Children South Africa CEO, Gugu Ndebele explained, “These 16 Days marks the launch of our priority campaign in which we aim to reduce violence against children over the next five years. It is not enough to react to child abuse and put plasters on it. We need to invest more in preventing child abuse from happening in the first place”.

Save the Children South Africa initiated the campaign in response to the shocking findings in it violence against children costing study. According to the study South Africa lost R238.58 billion in 2015 due to violence against children.

The campaign launch coincides with government’s 16 Days of Activism against woman and child abuse.

A sculpture wrapped in bandages, containing messages on violence against children will sit at Constitutional Hill for the duration of the 16 Days initiative. The Premier, MEC, HOD, Police Commissioner and 40 Police officers will unwrap layers of the sculpture to show their support for this campaign.
