The #GivingTuesday Campaign has just launched in South Africa, with the 27th of November marked as the first ever official GivingTuesday. Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday has become a global giving movement, which is active in over 50 countries worldwide and is a publicly owned campaign to share the goodness of humanity.
“#GivingTuesday is something that is made to be owned by many and participated in by many, it is an unbranded movement and people can take and shape it…the spirit of this is not to mourn the terrible things that are happening in our world, yes we acknowledge them, but to celebrate our ability to have a positive impact on them,” says Asha Curran, a leading figure in the #GivingTuesday movement.
Save the Children South Africa’s Marketing Manager Rodney Knotts describes the campaign as “an exciting collaboration among the people and leading charities like Save the Children.” He adds that “it offers us a chance to kick off the festive season and get in the spirit of generosity. As part of this effort, we are proud to offer an array of fun and meaningful ways for supporters to spread cheer to children in need across South Africa. We look forward to achieving our biggest giving season ever.”
The theme for this year is #MyGivingStory, which is designed to foster a public conversation about giving and, through stories, to inspire more people to give.
“Giving is something that should come naturally to people, but every now and then people need to be reminded why they should give, sometimes we get so comfortable in our own space that we forget what people are going through out there,” says Award winning actress and SCSA Ambassador Terry Pheto.
She has also shared her giving story, explaining why she is giving to SCSA. “Part of my responsibility is to bring awareness to the work that Save the Children does in South Africa. To advocate for the kids, to be the voice for the kids, because one of the things that I cannot stand is injustice, and feel that there’s one person that I will fight for if there’s injustice is a kid, because there’s no way that they can defend themselves,” says Pheto.
