Save the Children South Africa picking up the pieces after break-in at Hlayisanani Early Childhood Development Centre in Alexandra township

50 children attending the Save the Children run Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in Alexander have been effected after the centre was broken into and all their kitchen appliances and food was stolen.

“Our centre was broken into last night and all our appliances, the fridge, stove and chest freezer was stolen. Our staff had to scramble to ensure the children had a breakfast this morning. For many of the children in our centre the meals we provide are the only meals they receive,” said Save the Children Provincial Manager, Linda Alberts.

The Hlayisanani ECD centre has been a beacon of hope to the Alexandra community since 1998. The establishment situated in Setswetla, is a well-respected facility that offers shelter in times of flooding as well as community workshops that help young mothers and teens make better choices.

“In situations like these, children are most effected as they lose more than material possessions, they lose a sense of security, they lose valued time at school and often they suffer emotional trauma which can have a lasting impact,” added Alberts.

“It is important that we help them rebuild their lives as soon as possible to minimise the trauma.”

To assist those effected, Save the Children South Africa is appealing to the public to donate what they can to replace stolen appliances and to assist with financial contributions to repair damaged property.
