South Africans go to the polls on Wednesday, 08 May. The past few months politicians have been criss-crossing the country, hearing from prospective voters and making promises.
But what about the views of those who cannot vote, because they are still too young to do so?
 

Children at the Sizolomphakathi ECD centre have more reason to smile this winter, not only are they guaranteed a warm environment but they have also received new books and toys. This is thanks to the R50, 000 that was raised through the online crowdfunding philanthropy platform Different.org.
 

“I am overwhelmed by such beautiful energies of the children and the work that is being done in giving these kids an opportunity to grow. I have been impressed by how we are putting children at the centre of these activities and the parents. We are seeing the good results of how the funds are being used,” said Bvlgari’s Mauro Di Roberto during a recent visit to Limpopo.
 

 

Global Communications (GC) and Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) recently hosted a career day for twelve top performing grade 12 pupil from Limpopo. The event, which took place at the company’s offices in Centurion, was used as an opportunity for the pupil to learn about the importance of telecommunications and the two-way radio industry in the times of modern day technology.

 

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) is horrified by reports of the rape of a Grade 8 pupil from Luminis Secondary School in Diepkloof, Soweto. It is alleged that the incident took place during a school induction camp in De Deur, Vaal last Friday.

Christmas is a time for giving, and what better way to give back than to spend the day with children? Marriot Hotels recently threw a surprise Christmas party for the children, who attend at our Hlayisanani Early Childhood Development Centre in Alexandra.  
 

On 29 November 2018, the Constitutional Court will consider the constitutionality of the use of corporal punishment in the home. The Constitutional Court has prohibited corporal punishment in detention settings in 1995 and in schools in 2000, and this case presents the opportunity to prohibit its use in the home. At present, the common law defence of ‘reasonable chastisement’ practically allows parents to hit their children with the justification of corporal punishment being a form of discipline. The central question before the Constitutional Court is whether this practice should continue to be allowed or whether it needs to be prohibited since it violates children’s rights.

The 25^th of November marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. As Save the Children South Africa , we are calling for a collective effort to make South Africa safe, particularly for the most vulnerable members of our society - the children.
